Tucked away in the charming village of Drumshanbo lies Acres Lake – a peaceful oasis and home to Ireland’s first floating boardwalk. This part of the Shannon Blueway is ideal for all ages and abilities, offering scenic walking and cycling routes alongside the lapping waters of the canal.

Start your trip with a coffee or lunch at Jinny’s Tearooms, a popular local café that serves delicious baked goods and light bites using locally sourced ingredients. Once fuelled up, take to the 600m floating boardwalk, which marks the beginning of a 6.5km walking and cycling route along the Shannon Blueway. The trail meanders from Acres Lake to Battlebridge Lock, with stunning views, interpretive panels, and a rich variety of plant and birdlife along the way.

Families will love the added attractions: there’s a well-equipped playground, benches for resting or picnicking, and water-based activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and bike rentals during the summer months. For a longer adventure, connect to the Drumleague Lock Loop Walk or the Drumhauver Bridge Loop Walk, both offering even more opportunities to enjoy the peaceful Leitrim countryside.

Top Tip: Bring a camera – Acres Lake is a haven for wildlife and scenic snapshots, especially in early morning or evening light.

Lough Rynn Castle Gardens & Woodlands (25 min from Carrick)

For a tranquil escape steeped in heritage, the estate at Lough Rynn Castle is a must-see. Known for its romantic Victorian walled gardens, majestic trees, and peaceful woodland trails, it’s one of Leitrim’s most photogenic spots.

The gardens here are open to the public year-round and feature immaculately kept hedgerows, rose gardens, and seasonal blooms. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, quiet reflection, or a low-key photoshoot. A walk through the adjoining woodlands offers glimpses of Lough Rynn’s lakeshore, as well as the occasional heron or swan gliding by.

The estate’s origins date back centuries. It was once the ancestral seat of Lord Leitrim, William Sydney Clements, a landlord known for his notoriously harsh treatment of tenants during the 19th century. His rule ended abruptly in 1878 when he was assassinated near Milford, Donegal – a dramatic event that left a lasting imprint on Irish history.

Today, the castle has been lovingly restored and now operates as a luxury hotel, but the grounds remain open to visitors. Recently, a new Rowing Centre has been added to the estate, further enhancing the lakeside atmosphere with gentle activity and motion on the water.

Fenagh Abbey & Heritage Centre (30 min from Carrick)

History buffs and folklore fans alike will love Fenagh Abbey – a serene and storied ruin set in the heart of one of Ireland’s oldest monastic settlements.

Believed to be founded in the 6th century by St. Caillin, Fenagh Abbey holds a special place in Irish religious and cultural history. The current ruins mostly date from the 15th century, but the abbey’s origins stretch far deeper. Local legend claims that St. Caillin’s grave lies beneath the ancient stones, and the area is said to be steeped in myth – from Viking raids to sightings of ghostly monks still wandering the grounds.

Right next door, the Fenagh Heritage Centre offers an in-depth look at the abbey’s long past, with free entry and informative exhibits about local archaeology, religious artifacts, and folklore. The staff are passionate about local history and happy to share their knowledge – don’t be shy about asking questions!

Fenagh village itself is small and peaceful, with a family-run coffee shop, playground, and a few inviting places to sit and take in the view. It’s an ideal spot for a quiet break from the busier tourist trails.

Top Tip: Check ahead for heritage events or guided tours – the centre occasionally hosts special exhibitions and seasonal storytelling events.
