Celebrate Christmas & New Year’s in Carrick-on-Shannon

If you’re thinking about heading to the largest town in picturesque County Leitrim in the north of Ireland, take a look at what’s on in Carrick-on-Shannon this Christmas and New Year, where the locals certainly know how to throw a party.

Carrick-on-Shannon really comes alive with festive cheer and merriment in the build-up to Christmas with plenty to see and do for all ages

Meander Round the Christmas Village Markets

There’s nothing quite like meandering around a Christmas market, browsing through quirky, handmade items for sale that you won’t find in the stores, while warming yourself up with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie or two, to get in the festive mood.

The festive season wouldn’t be the same in Carrick-on-Shannon without the town’s Christmas markets. Carrick’s Christmas markets are the perfect place for all your Christmas shopping needs (and don’t forget the mince pies and mulled wine).

Visit Santa’s Grotto

Children can’t resist meeting Santa himself on the run-up to Christmas. This unforgettable festive experience for youngsters can be enjoyed in Carrick-on-Shannon. Santa’s snug and cosy grotto in the centre of Leitrim town is a perfect treat for little ones, eager to meet Father Christmas (and no doubt tell him all the things they want for Christmas).

Take a Trip to the Carrick Cineplex

There’s nothing quite as Christmassy as heading to the cinema to watch a widely-anticipated festive film with friends and family. The Christmas classics never fail to be showcased at the Carrick Cineplex. Each year, the town’s popular cinema complex presents a range of festive movies to cater for all ages and tastes, with 2018 being no exception.

Cosy up with the popcorn and pretzels at the Carrick Cineplex this Christmas. The films showing haven’t been announced yet but you can certainly expect some Christmas classics (previous showings have included Home Alone, Elf and Love Actually).

Enjoy the Christmas Lights

For many years the streets, squares and trees of Carrick-on-Shannon have come alive in December with a spectacular display of Christmas lights twinkling in festive colours and putting all who visit this bustling Irish town in the Christmas spirit.

Sadly, there is growing concern that the Christmas lights won’t be switched on this year due to insufficient funds. However, Carrick Chamber is working hard to gather support from local businesses to ensure the town is illuminated in its usual festive cheer this Christmas, so fingers crossed.

Participate in the Carrick-on-Shannon Christmas Day Swim

When most of us are tucking into a plateful of turkey, the bravest residents of Carrick-on-Shannon are congregating at the water’s edge at the slipway at Emerald Star to join in the annual Christmas Day Swim. The event raises much-needed funds for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, the National Council for the Blind and the Leitrim Talking Newspaper.

The event typically takes place after midday’s mass and raises funds for local charities. Well-deserved hot beverages are served to warm up the swimmers and their spectator. Fancy dress is encouraged, so don’t be alarmed if you see a giant polar bear diving into the water on Christmas Day.
